Mr. Mark Nelson
Mark Nelson, Director
Satellite Jazz Ensemble is the Intermediate level jazz ensemble at SHS. This ensemble works on style and refinement of curriculum learned in the SHS Jazz Band.

This ensemble also plays professional level literature and can easily be mistaken for a "top" ensemble in any other high school. They have also hosted many guest artists and clinicians. The ensemble has been featured at the UNF Jazz Festival, the Lakeside Jazz Festival and the Florida Institute of Technology's WFIT radio sponsored Smithsonian, April Jazz Appreciation Concert. Enrollment is based on audition. Click here for more information.

Introductory Jazz - Satellite Jazz Band
Directed by Mr. Mark Sunderland, Associate Director of Instrumental Music

Mr. Mark Sunderland
Mark Sunderland,
Associate Director
The Satellite Jazz Band is the entry-level ensemble of the Satellite Jazz Program. Students learn about jazz through performance, blues patterns, scales, improvisational classes, mentoring by advanced jazz students and work with clinicians and current jazz performers/educators.

This ensemble provides a solid foundation of jazz studies and it is not unusual for motivated students to "jump over" the intermediate jazz ensemble right into the top group at the end of one year.

The Satellite Jazz Band performs has garnered superior ratings from adjudicators. Auditions are not required. Auditions will be used for "chair" placement.
